My scapulars are special in two significant ways.
First off, each one is unique! Because I embroider each image by hand, every design varies slightly. I try to put a high quality of detail into my work, dedicating hours to each design. A scapular is a beautiful sacramental that we carry around with us all day -literally! I believe that something that well-used and iconic to the Catholic Faith should be of the highest quality, and last the test of time.
There’s also something to be said about the durability of handmade products!
Think about how long a cheap, mass-produced scapular would last, six months? a year? Maybe two years if you’re lucky. The very first scapulars I ever made were matching Saint Therese scapulars for my friend and me, who were getting confirmed together. Now, four years later, my scapular has just begun to show signs of wear, but is still quite sturdy, and will probably last several more years before I need to think about replacing it!
I sew each cord onto the brown wool separately, then sew the two brown pieces together, and finally, finish it off with an x stitch border. Each stitch adds to the ultimate strength of the finished scapular, and I am quite confident in the durability of my design. When I started sewing scapulars, I asked myself –If I’m in control here, why not make them as incorruptible as possible?
My scapulars are made with 100% wool (brown and cream), and measure 3.5cm by 4cm. The cord length is 13″, and the total length measures 16″.
